What is a signed vintage jewel worth?

A signature from a major house can increase the value of a jewel by a factor of three to ten compared to a technically similar, unsigned piece. But signing alone is not enough — verifiable provenance, documentation, and completeness are equally important. In this guide, we explain exactly what appraisers look for, and what role the original box, invoice, and archive entry play. Brand names such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron or Bulgari are mentioned solely as text; we deliberately do not display house brands.

De waardefactoren

Een taxateur weegt bij deze categorie een vast aantal criteria. Hieronder leggen we ze uit, in de volgorde waarin ze doorgaans worden bekeken.

Signature and numbering

A genuine house signature consists of three to four elements: the brand name, a serial number, the metal hallmark, and (for earlier pieces) a maker's mark of the manufacturer who worked for the house. All these markings are small, precisely placed, and verifiable with a 10x loupe.

Counterfeit signatures are a real problem. They are often crooked, too coarsely engraved, or lack the serial number.

Verifiable provenance

House archives, old auction catalogues, and published monographs are the sources to confirm a signature. Serial numbers can be checked by the major houses for a fee — for pieces worth several thousand euros, this is an investment that pays for itself.

Provenance (demonstrable ownership history) through old appraisals, insurance, or family documentation works cumulatively: each additional piece of evidence strengthens the dossier.

Documentation and original box

Original box, original invoice, and (for larger pieces) a certificate of authenticity from the house weigh heavily. For modern collections (after 1970), this documentation is increasingly available; for art deco pieces from the 1920s, it is rare. So keep all paperwork that comes with a family heirloom — it is sometimes worth more than the jewel itself.

Factor 3–10 above unsigned

In practice, for comparable pieces (same metal, same stones, same period), we see a factor of three to ten between signed and unsigned. For iconic collection lines, this factor can be even higher. An unsigned piece from a major workshop is not worthless — it is appraised based on intrinsic and design value, without the signature premium.

Indicatieve bandbreedtes

Prijsranges als richtlijn

  • Smaller signed piece without documentation

Ring or pendant, must be fully verifiable in terms of signing and number.

    € 800 – € 3.500
  • Signed piece with original box and certificate

Documentation can more than double the value.

    € 2.500 – € 15.000
  • Iconic model (e.g., well-known collection line)

Models from documented collections attract international buyers.

    € 6.000 – € 90.000+
  • Important historical or custom piece

Provenance, auction history, and publications weigh heavily.

    € 20.000 – € 500.000+

Indicatief; werkelijke waarde vereist beoordeling van het stuk zelf. Marktprijzen fluctueren en zeldzame varianten liggen boven de bovengrens.

Where to get an appraisal?

For signed work, we recommend an appraisal by a specialist with auction experience. Small jewellers without experience with house brands often underestimate such pieces. Large international auction houses often offer a free initial estimate based on photos. When in doubt, always ask for two independent opinions — the differences can be significant and that matters for your sales strategy.

What original stones do for the value

Later replacement (even with comparable gemstones) affects authenticity and is weighed separately in the appraisal. Original stones in their original setting are the golden combination. When in doubt: do not replace anything before appraisal and keep loose original stones separately in a bag with the piece.

Iconic collection lines

Some signed pieces belong to a documented collection line. For these lines, separate guides exist with ranges, versions, and authenticity patterns: <a href="/waarde/merken/cartier-love-armband">Cartier Love bracelet</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/cartier-trinity">Trinity</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/cartier-juste-un-clou">Juste un Clou</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/van-cleef-arpels-alhambra">Van Cleef &amp; Arpels Alhambra</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/bulgari-serpenti">Bulgari Serpenti</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/bulgari-bzero1">B.zero1</a>, <a href="/waarde/merken/tiffany-elsa-peretti">Tiffany Elsa Peretti</a> and <a href="/waarde/merken/tiffany-return-to-tiffany">Return to Tiffany</a>.

Veelgestelde vragen

Antwoorden op vier vragen

How do I recognise a genuine signature?+

With a 10x loupe. The letters are precisely placed, have uniform depth, and are sharply defined. Serial number always separate and neat.

Is an unsigned piece from a major house worthless?+

Not worthless, but appraisable based on intrinsic and design value, without the signature premium. This can make a difference of tens of percent.

Can I have something verified by the house myself?+

Some houses offer authentication for a fee. This often takes weeks to months and is recommended for pieces worth several thousand euros.

What if the original stones have been replaced?+

Value-depressing. Later replacement (even with comparable gemstones) affects authenticity and is weighed separately in the appraisal.
