A signature adds value on fundamentally different criteria than material or style. Where an unsigned art-deco platinum piece is judged on its intrinsic qualities — metal, old cuts, hand work — a signed piece brings origin into the balance as a factor in its own right. For the collectors' market, a documentable brand engraving is often the reason a piece is put up for auction at all; without a signature the same work would trade in a different price bracket.
The distinction between signed and attributed is sharp. Signed means the piece actually carries the brand engraving; attributed (often 'in the style of' or 'attributed to' in auction catalogues) means it probably comes from the atelier but is not formally signed. The value difference between those two categories can be a factor of three to ten. Especially with the great houses it always pays to seek independent assessment — signatures are also forged, and precisely with well-known names the pressure to copy is high.
